Hub Update August 2022

SAGE:

We have a new group called Sexuality and Gender Equality (SAGE) Crew at the Hub to replace Queer Peers which is not currently running. This group is being championed by our Youth Engagement Coordinator Rex. We are grateful to KSAC for their support on this and are looking forward to having a 2SLGBTQ+ group in the space again. I have attached a digital brochure about SAGE as well as one that is more printer friendly. Please pass this information along to coworkers, employees, and clients. The first few sessions will be more informal. This group will be largely youth driven, with a focus on the activities and sessions that members are looking for. This group is drop-in based. Alongside the drop-in group, SAGE is the term we will be housing our already offered gender affirming supports under. We have TransTape and clothing at the Hub that is available at no cost to youth and have funds through our own budget and KSAC's support to purchase binders.

WNHAC Beading Circle:

WNHAC and the Hub will be partnering to hold a beading circle on August 17th from 1:00-4:00. Lunch will be included and we are asking that youth pre-register. This event is aimed at youth who are 12-18 years of age, registration can be done by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. Young Parents Group:

Jenna Andrews, one of the counsellors at the Hub, is spearheading a social/learning group for young parents in Kenora. She has been reaching out to various programs to collaborate, if you have a program at your organization that you think would be a good fit please email This email address is being protected from spambots. We will be piloting this group with a cap of 10 parents, children are welcome to be a part of the group.

Activity Group for Youth Working on Limiting Substance Use

Julianna Renzullo, one of the counsellors at the Hub has identified through conversations with folks in the space that for many of them their use of substances  is driven by not having anything else to keep them distracted/engaged in the evenings. In response to this Julie has been connecting with other providers to build an 8-week pilot program for youth to join once a week from 6:00-8:00pm. This group will centre a group meal, some mental health/substance use content, and an activity e.g. bowling, workout class, movie. This group will be built on principles of harm reduction, youth are not required to maintain sobriety to be in the group, however those who are not in a safe headspace to participate may be redirected. The goal for this group is to offer alternatives to substance use and begin to form a community of young people. *We also clearly need a shorter name, so if anyone has any thoughts, please let us know *

Agricultural Fair & Open Air Market

The Hub will have tables at both the Agricultural Fair and the August 13th Open Air Market. Please feel free to stop by and say hello, we love seeing our partners out in the wild.

Back to School BBQ:

The back-to-school BBQ is fast approaching, we are pulling together donations and permits and will be holding the BBQ on August 31st at the back doors of the Hub. More communications on this will follow. Last year we gave out 120 backpacks and we are hoping to match that this year
